Did you know that you can register a .co.za domain name for R50?
Most of the Internet Service Providers are still charging between R100 and R200 for every domain name you register. But Uniforum, the organization which administers the .co.za namespace, dropped the annual registration price for .co.za domains to R50 quite some time ago. You can register a domain name directly with Uniforum, using their fascinating 1980′s-style email form – no fancy interactivity here!
There’s one catch, however. You need to know the DNS server address and IP address when you register the domain. Not only that, but the DNS server and IP have to actually be active.
There is a way around this. I’m sure there must be some SA-based hosting companies who will let you have a reseller account, which allows you to create user accounts yourself, at a reasonable price. Please let me know if you find one.
The solution I’ve been using for the last 2 years is this. Find a US-based hosting company which allows you to set up multiple user accounts or add-on domains. Sign up with them – pricing should be between $6.95 and $10 a month (less than I was paying Hetzner for ONE account). Set up your new domain on their server. Apply for the domain at Uniforum.
