Choosing a ClickBank Product to Promote
ClickBank is an affiliate network, which sells products from over 12,000 publishers. There are a couple of points you need to know about Clickbank:
- ClickBank has been operating since 1998. 10 years is a long time on the web!
- ClickBank has over 100,000 affiliates and sells over 35,000 products
- ClickBank only allows downloadable digital products to be sold.
- ClickBank pays publishers and affiliates by cheque, every 14 days.

Once you’ve signed up as an affiliate, you can choose products to promote. You are automatically credited with a percentage of any sales you make. The system keeps track of your sales by creating a link which contains your affiliate ID and the name of the product.
In ClickBank’s terminology, this is known as a ‘hoplink’, and it looks like this:

and you can use whatever anchor text you like:

Choosing products to promote
With over 35,000 products to choose from, it’s important to pick profitable ones to promote. Every promotion you do has a cost – if not in money, then in time. You obviously want to avoid promoting products that people don’t buy, or products with a high refund rate. ClickBank makes it easy to find the best products to promote.
Click on the ‘Marketplace’ link at the top of the ClickBank site:
ClickBank divides products into 9 categories (publishers can choose 2 categories for their product, so you’ll see most products listed in more than one category). Pick a category from the drop-down list – I’ve chosen ‘Money and Employment’. Click the ‘Go’ button to see a list of products in this category, in order of popularity.
The great thing about ClickBank is that you can see products that are actually selling – there’s very little guesswork involved. Of course, the products you see may not be the same as the ones I see. But you can be sure that the top ones on the list are the most popular.
Under each product listing is a row of cryptic numbers. The important ones are these:
$/sale: This is the dollar amount paid to affiliates for each sale. ClickBank takes a cut of the total sales price ($1.00 + 7.5%), and the publisher decides what percentage he’s prepared to share with affiliates – usually between 50% and 75%. The percentage isn’t that important – what we’re interested in is the dollar amount.
Future$: ClickBank introduced recurring payments last year. This means that there’s a continuity program – the product has a monthly membership fee, either from the start or as an ‘upsell’. This is good – it means you get paid multiple times for the same amount of effort.
%refd: This is the percentage of sales referred by affiliates. A higher percentage means that the publisher is probably not advertising the sales page himself, which is better for you.
grav: Gravity is a number calculated by ClickBank, which gives an indication of how many affiliates are currently promoting the product. It is affected by the number of affiliate sales and how recently they occurred. The higher the gravity, the more affiliates are competing to sell the product.
There are two schools of thought when it comes to gravity. One is to promote the most popular products, which can certainly work – depending on your source of traffic. The other is to find good products which are not as popular, where you won’t have nearly as much competition.
You’ll also see two links – one to the publisher’s ‘pitch page’, ClickBank’s cutesy term for what everyone else calls a sales page, and one to their hoplink generator. Click on the ‘view pitch page’ link to have a good look at the sales page for any product you’re interested in promoting. Would you buy the product based on the sales page?
Click on ‘create hoplink’ to generate your hoplink for the product.

It is not difficult to make money from Clickbank, but as with anything in life you have to put some effort into it, you cannot for example throw up a website selling a clickbank product and just sit back and expect the money to flow in.
It needs to have at least two months work put into it before it will run on auto-pilot. You need to build links, you need to build up traffic from a variety of sources, such as Articles, PPC, Advertising.
You have to invest in your site make it better than the rest, once it get to page one of the big G then relax a little, but keep doing SEO tweaks to stay where you are Number 1 on Google is where the money is made.
